China’s BYD surpasses Tesla in sales, becoming the top EV manufacturer globally.
Affordable models like the Dolphin and Seal drive BYD’s success in China and international markets, appealing to price-sensitive buyers.
Analysts predict further market share growth for BYD in 2025 as it expands exports and opens new factories abroad.
Chinese EV giant BYD delivered over 3 million vehicles in 2024, outpacing Tesla’s 1.8 million deliveries and cementing its position as the world’s top-selling EV manufacturer.
Bountiful business model: BYD, which is backed by Warren Buffett, posted more than $100 billion in annual revenue, fueled by surging demand both in China and international markets. The company’s strong performance was underpinned by its vertically integrated business model, controlling everything from battery production to semiconductor development.
Price point appeal: BYD also benefited from China’s continued emphasis on domestic clean energy adoption, as well as robust global expansion—especially in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and parts of Europe. Its affordable EV models, such as the Dolphin and Seal, have gained traction among price-sensitive buyers seeking reliable alternatives to premium Western brands.
Growth through scaling: While Tesla remains dominant in the premium EV market and maintains higher margins per vehicle, BYD’s ability to scale production at lower price points is proving to be a powerful growth lever. The Shenzhen-based company also eclipsed 2024 earnings expectations, reporting net profits of approximately $4.2 billion, up nearly 80% year over year.
Tesla’s turmoil: Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously downplayed the competitive threat posed by Chinese automakers, but the latest data suggests a shifting tide. Tesla has faced mounting challenges, including softening demand in key markets, growing competition, and regulatory hurdles in Europe and the U.S. Meanwhile, BYD continues to strengthen its supply chains and invest in next-generation battery technologies like sodium-ion, further enhancing its cost competitiveness.
The road ahead: Analysts now predict that BYD’s global market share could expand further in 2025 as it ramps up exports and opens new factories abroad, including in Thailand and Brazil. The company’s swift rise underscores China’s growing influence in the EV sector and the broader transition toward sustainable transportation.
