The U.S. Department of Energy is sounding the alarm over the country’s aging power grid, delivering a blunt warning that the nation could face a 100-fold increase in blackouts by 2030. The agency’s new report blames a widening gap between the explosive energy demands of AI and data centers and the country’s ability to build new, reliable power generation.

A fundamental mismatch: The problem isn’t a lack of new projects, but the type of power they provide. While 209 gigawatts of new capacity are planned to replace 104 gigawatts of retiring ‘firm’ generation, the report flags a dangerous imbalance. Only 22 gigawatts of the new supply will provide the same kind of reliable, baseload power the grid depends on.

Ground zero: The epicenter of this tension is Northern Virginia’s “Data Center Alley,” home to the world’s highest density of data centers. This region falls under PJM Interconnection, America’s largest grid operator, which projects a staggering 32 gigawatts of new demand by 2030, almost entirely from new data centers.

Playing hardball: The strain is sparking political conflict, with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro threatening to pull his state, a major electricity exporter, out of PJM altogether if it can’t control costs. “We need speed from PJM, we need transparency from PJM and we need to keep consumer costs down with PJM,” Shapiro told Reuters.

The physical reality of AI: The report underscores a critical bottleneck for the tech industry’s growth. AI’s future doesn’t just depend on better algorithms, but on solving the old-world, physical challenge of building massive power infrastructure fast enough to support it. The pressure is already leading to corporate shakeups, with the head of the nation’s largest power grid set to depart. Meanwhile, some tech giants are taking matters into their own hands, with Microsoft helping fund a nuclear plant reboot just to power its data centers.
