TL;DR
  • Chevron plans to reduce its global headcount by 15% to 20% by the end of 2026, impacting around 8,000 employees.
  • The move aims to save up to $3 billion through cost-cutting measures, including technological adoption and asset sales.

Chevron Corporation has announced plans to cut its global workforce by 15% to 20% by the end of 2026, a move expected to affect approximately 8,000 employees.

Savings drive: The plan aligns with the oil giant’s strategy to cut costs, streamline operations, and enhance competitiveness in a challenging energy market. Chevron aims to achieve up to $3 billion in cost savings through technological adoption, asset sales, and organizational restructuring.

Long-term focus: “Chevron is taking action to simplify our organizational structure, execute faster and more effectively, and position the company for stronger long-term competitiveness,” the company’s Vice Chairman Mark Nelson said in a statement.

“We do not take these actions lightly and will support our employees through the transition. But responsible leadership requires taking these steps to improve the long-term competitiveness of our company for our people, our shareholders and our communities.”

Earnings drop: In its fourth-quarter 2024 financial results, Chevron reported adjusted earnings of $3.6 billion, down from $6.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023. The decline was attributed to weaker refining margins and lower oil prices.

Hess on the horizon: Chevron’s planned acquisition of Hess Corporation for $53 billion would significantly bolster its asset portfolio. The deal, announced in October 2023, is expected to close in the first half of 2024, pending regulatory approvals and the resolution of ongoing arbitration proceedings regarding preemptive rights in the Stabroek Block joint operating agreement.

The acquisition would provide Chevron with a 30% stake in Guyana’s oilfields, significantly enhancing its reserves and production capabilities.
